What a feature wall is

One Wall That Holds the Room.

Most rooms have one wall everyone faces: the wall with the TV, the long wall in the great room, the wall you see from the front door.

Instead of a TV on a bracket and a console below it, a feature wall is built out with stone, panels, shelves and light. The screen settles into the wall, the cables disappear and the shelves glow.

That’s what a feature wall really does. It changes how your home feels the moment you walk in.

A question homeowners ask

How the Shelves Float.

No brackets you can see, and a line of light under every shelf.

  1. No visible brackets. A hidden support is fixed to the wall before the shelf goes on, and the shelf covers it.

  2. Light under every shelf. An LED strip is set into the underside of each shelf, so the light falls softly on the wall below. The photo: an arch of No. 06, before the shelves went on.

Planning a media wall

Designed Around Your Screen and Your Seats.

A media wall is only as good as the view from the sofa. The details are settled in the drawing, so the finished wall is easy to live with every day.

  • Screen size and position. In proportion to the wall and to how far you sit.
  • A backlight. So the TV looks set into the wall instead of hung on it.
  • A place for the equipment. Streaming boxes, game consoles and audio, inside a cabinet.
  • No cords. Power and cables are planned inside the wall before it is closed.
  • The soundbar. Tucked in just under the screen, or set into a recess in the stone.
  • Storage built in. Open towers, a long run of cabinets or floating shelves.

Investment

What Shapes the Cost.

Every wall is quoted from its own drawing and scope.

Width and height

Full-width walls and tall ceilings take more frame and finish.

The finishes

One finish, or two together, like stone with slats or shiplap.

Storage

Towers, cabinets and shelves add carpentry and finishing.

Light

How many shelves, slats and backlights are lit.

A fireplace

Adding a linear fireplace adds the unit and the frame around it.

The screen

The TV size, the equipment cabinet and the cable routes.

You receive your drawing and a written proposal together, so you know the investment before anything is built.

Questions

Feature Wall Questions.

What is a feature wall?

A feature wall is the one wall in a room designed to hold the eye. It can be a TV or media wall, a stacked stone wall, a slat or fluted wall, a painted panel wall with geometric trim or a wall of built-ins with light set into it.

What is the difference between a feature wall and an accent wall?

An accent wall usually changes the surface of a wall with molding, paneling or color. A feature wall is built out: a new frame, storage, light, the TV and often a fireplace, designed as one piece.

Does a media wall need a fireplace?

No. Some of our media walls have a linear fireplace and some do not. We design around what you want in the room.

Can one remote turn on the lights?

Yes. One press of the remote turns on the light behind the TV and the lights under the shelves, together.

How do the shelves float?

No brackets show. A hidden support is fixed to the wall before the shelf goes on, and the shelf covers it.

What size TV works on a media wall?

We design around your TV or the size you plan to buy. The drawing shows the screen in proportion to the wall, so the storage and trim around it feel balanced.

Where do the cable box and the audio equipment go?

We plan a place for them in the drawing, usually inside a cabinet, with routes for the cables to the TV and the soundbar.

Can you match a feature wall to my kitchen or floors?

Yes. We choose tones and finishes with the rest of your open floor plan in mind, especially where the living room meets the kitchen.

Will I see the wall before you build it?

Yes. We measure at your home and sketch the wall by hand. Our designer then draws it to scale, every measurement in inches, and you approve it before anything is built.
